Retawes Review: Resident Evil 6

Resident Evil 6 - 15/20

With the financial and fanatic disappointment of later "Resident Evil" games of the franchise, has Capcom salvaged the positives of the series to create a modern scare?

Story and Setting - 8/10

Resident Evil 6's plot revolves around the global infection that is, the 'C-Virus'. With the instruction of Ada Wong and a double agent-esque figure, the malicious syndicate known as 'New Umbrella' declares 'War on Humanity'. Due to this, zombie hunters Leon S. Kennedy, Chris Redfield and co. attempt to prevent an 'End of War' scenario.

Capcom's tells the story through the four individual campaigns (Leon's;Chris';Sherry's;and Ada's.) as each tale intertwines with another. This is specifically shown in Agent Wong's solo section as she clashes with each  of the 3 pairs (Leon/Helena;Chris/Piers ;Sherry/Jake) for comparable reasons.

The style of Capcom's zombie cult is essentially an updated version of Resident Evil 4 and 3's environments. In one campaign, the player embarks through Eastern-European alleys, crowded by the undead where as another campaign sees Leon travelling through a market town in Chinatown (Situated in China, but I couldn't resist the pun!)

Incidentally, RE takes great note in representing a shadow of how modern society would react to a 'plague/zombie' crisis. For instance, (Spoiler Alert!) during Leon's campaign, there is a cloud of C-Virus infused gas that is intoxicating the zombie-free area of Beijing. Once the mesmerizing death trap devours the oriental citizens, there are streets upon streets of civilians fluttering from undead infection, clenching their grip on your legs, gasping for air, etc..

Incidentally, the music and sound effects of Capcom's recent horror title are substantial enough for recognition. Whether zombies are submerging from the Arctic depths or an entire horde are bombarding your shotgun that has little to no ammunition, the music definitely erupts the suspense. Furthermore, the grunts and haunts from the unholy soldiers provides a fearful factor that not only reflects on the character's occasional thoughts of despair or need for swiftness, but also reflects on our inner fear of demons.

Graphics and Gameplay - 7/10

The story and soundtrack are not the only nail-biting traumas however.

As most gamers would know, Resident Evil 5 wasn't welcomed in the gameplay lounge. Resident Evil 6 however, changes improves upon a few of its failures.

As previously stated, Resident Evil 6's main game is split into four campaigns with each tale being vastly different from one another. For instance, Leon's saga enhances on Resident Evil 4's mechanics where as Chris' 'military-esque' chapter centres around a third-person shooter style of gameplay.

Although each campaign has individual gaming mechanisms, each storyline has puzzles and bosses. Unfortunately, the puzzles are solved within a few seconds. The bosses on the other hand, are infuriatingly ridiculous and extensive. This is strongly pointed out during Leon's campaign where the player must defeat an enhanced version of Nemesis, Helena's mutated and sexually appeared sister and a certain individual's multiple mutations of a Dog, Horse, T-Rex, Octopus, Fly and Armoured Mosquito.

Now this, is messed up.

In the end of my session with Capcom, I experienced more graphical glitches and jagged gameplay bugs than I have with Borderlands 2, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and Batman: Arkham City combined! This is no overstatement or exaggeration. The game has several issues that result in the player's camera and combat to be disfigured and unresponsive.

Overall - 15/20

Summarising my bone-chilling review, Capcom have really tried to re-invent the nostalgia that is Resident Evil with the addition of significant characters and cameos in each campaign to represent continuity. Unfortunately, the graphics and un-playable bugs minimize the fun factor of this zombie tale. If you stumble this upon a Christmas sale or as a Birthday present then you'll enjoy it. However, if you bought it on release date for the initial retail release day price, ranging from $79-98 (AU) then you will outline the flaws of this feared attempt to re-create a loved franchise from the 20th century abyss.

A 'Gendering' Issue....

Now, I understand that I have stated that this blog is for entertainment purposes, but I believe that the important and surfacing issue of Sexism and Racism derived from The Australian Liberal Party leader Tony Abbott has affecting the globe. For those that are unaware of his vile behaviour, click the link below (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-10-09/julia-gillard-attacks-abbott-of-hypocrisy/4303634). If not (Or afterwards), read my letter to the conservative pig against his villifications towards Asylum Seekers, Homosexuality, Women in Society and his racist remarks. My letter has been copied from my Facebook message to his disgusting page.

Dear Mr Abbott,
I am deeply disturbed by your revolting hypocrisy that you have displayed over these recent months. You claim that sexism and misogyny are disgusting and creates a negative impact on society.
Of all of the political personae to have vilified such horrendous acts, you would have to be the most bigotry portraying character of them all!

Your obvious affectation is revolting. You seamlessly switched 'bandwagons' solely to manipulate society into believing that you are one who believes in equality and righteous opinions.

However, are you not the same Tony Abbott who stated "What housewives need to understand while they're doing the ironing is that if they get it done commercially it's going to go up in price, and their own power bills are going to go up every year when they switch the iron off." ?

Incidentally, you're not only a villain against social modesty. You have also been considered racist, homophobic and deeply 'disturbed' by single parent families, Atheism and Muslim/Middle-Eastern Culture. As and Atheist being brought up by a single parent due to deceased family members, I am strongly against any of your accusations against what you consider a minority. Everyone that you've insulted, including myself will never believe or respect your verbal jabs at society.

Speaking of your racism, during interviews, if you aren't outlining the current PM's 'imperfections' of leadership then you are emphasising "we as Australians need to Stop The Boats".Here's a brief realisation for you, young children and women are on those boats. They have fled from vicious dictators, cruel living conditions and violent extensive prejudice actions towards their beliefs or culture. The last thing that they deserve is to be told that their capacious crusade to reach capitalist freedom has been denied as Australian politics has been infected by an anti foreign plague.

Now, this may be my own personal opinion, but aren't a majority of Australian citizens of multiple or non Anglo-Saxon origin?

Furthering back to my discussion on your hypocritical comments on Sexism, the PM should be recognised for something. Having the courage to stand up for her gender; opposing conservative values; and protecting the nation from allowing a sexist, homophobic, anti-Atheist/Muslim thug to participate in socially crashing the nation into the early 20th century.

To conclude, as I am aged 16 I will be voting in the next election. Whether or not Miss Gillard is the leader of the "Australian Labor Party", I will most definitely detest and slight chance of me or any non conservative friends and family supporting my life from voting for a vile and revolting person of your 'sinful' category.

Retawes Review: Borderlands 2

Borderlands 2 - 19.3/20

With the high expectations that Gearbox's 'Dungeon Shooter' Borderlands provided, does the second coming of Claptrap save or ruin Pandora?

Story and Setting - 9.8/10

Reflecting back on the original 'loot fest' that was Borderlands, one of its weak points was most definitely its story. Ironically, Pandora's sequel has surfaced the story's originality and created an engaging tale.

In B2, Lilith and Roland are 'together', A.K.A Rolith/Liland
Essentially, the game takes place seamlessly after its predecessor. Set in the vast world of Pandora, the original 'Vault Hunters' (People who seek rare caves filled with treasure known as vaults) have fled from their   fearsome finale (Spoiler Alert!) i.e. being tricked by Angel and escaping from the vault monsters grasp! Each hero has moved on from their adventure and is now defending Pandora's citizens from the game's nemesis, 'Handsome Jack'. Dictator of Pandora and Ruler of Hyperion, Jack desires the rare mineral Eridium for his malicious plot to rid the world of Sanctuary (The Game's main town) 'threat'. This, is where the new vault hunters (Maya, Axton, Zero and Salvador) come in. Upon boarding a train, the heroes are attacked by Handsome Jack's forces and relentlessly defeating gangs and vicious factions to restore Pandora with some help of course!

Sir Hammerlock reporting for duty!
Incidentally, there are a variety of characters that the Vault Hunters encounter. Some of whom include: the iconic dancing robot, Claptrap; the sadistic and psychotic, Doctor Zed; the sexual stripping persona of Moxxi; and the educated 'O'l English clichéd' cyborg, Sir Hammerlock. All of the characters in Pandora, have their own story and personality that is completely different to the next. For instance, the 'Black Market' owner Crazy Earl resembles a schizophrenic person where as the gun shop owner Marcus embodies a 'Wog' theme provided with his design and dialogue.

Speaking of the casts' quotes, the speech of Borderlands 2 is incredibly humorous. Irony, sexual tension and sarcasm are heavily used to provide the 'Tongue in Cheek' aspect. For instance, there is a quest (Given by Marcus) which involves the player endeavouring into a corrosive cavern to retrieve pornographic pictures of Moxxi giving the player the choice of returning it to Moxxi or to Marcus for questionable means. It's quests and side stories similar to this perverted problem that symbolise Borderlands 2's story and environment.

Consecutively, Borderlands 2's environment is vastly unique when compared to it's predecessor. For instance, within a few hours of playing, I had explored a snowy landscape, a notorious gang's stronghold and a desert themed environment appropriately named, 'The Dust'. Exploring different areas is such an enjoyable ease as there are arrays upon arrays of various locations to investigate.

Although it seems that there are no issues with Borderlands 2's cast and creativity, the soundtrack of Borderlands is below my expectations. It's not to say that the tracks are dull or disinteresting, but there wasn't any iconic songs that I can audibly captivate.

Graphics and Gameplay - 9.5/10

With my biased endorsement that the story and setting of Pandora was positive, are the graphics and gameplay on par?

Borderlands 2's texture and graphical identity has most definitely surpassed its predecessor. The original Borderlands was bland and brown where as Pandora's sequel is populated with all shades of rainbows.

Although, Gearbox still haven't fixed their 'Texture Popping' issue. Whenever the player enters a new area, the graphics look incredibly ancient before swiftly reverting to it's original state. Hopefully, this is fixed with an update as they continue to update the character customization.

Speaking of crafting your character, Borderlands 2 provides a 'Character Customization' option that blends a vast amount of skins and head sets acquired throughout the game to shape your character's identity. This crafts a unique quality to your individual character. For instance, I transformed my 'Siren' Maya into a Goth with a communist symbol near her breast where as a friend of mine made his 'Gunserker' Salvador into a 'Mexican cliché'.

Whose your favourite?

Incidentally, there are four classes to play as. They include: the gravity controlling 'Siren' , Maya; the dual wielding 'Gunzerker' , Salvador; the stealthy futuristic 'Assassin', Zero; and the Turret obsessed 'Commando', Axton. Each character provides a different experience to gameplay and when combined to together in Co-Op, they make a mighty team.

~Guns Glorious Guns~
Speaking of teamwork, the multiplayer mechanics of Gearbox's game are essential to the experience. The 'jump in/ jump out' style of gameplay allows players of different levels to team up. Furthermore, Gearbox have added a boosting system where if you join a higher levelled friend's game, you'll level up far more faster than usual in order to catch up to your team mate.

Shooting wise, the specifications of each of the 'BAZILLION' guns in the game are varied. Some demolish enemies with explosive damage, some utilise one of the four elements (Burn, Corrosive, Shock and the element damage enhancing Slag) while others simply 'spray and pray'. There are shields, relics, grenade and class mods as well but they are essentially there to enhance your character and play style with as much variety as the guns.

I specialised in supporting my team by instantly reviving them and dealing  significant elemental damage!

Though all of these damage and statistic enhancers are strengthened by the Skill Trees and 'Badass Rank' mechanics. The skill trees are simple, one tree is support, another damage dealing and another for solo play. The Baddas Rank however, is a new addition to the Pandora franchise. Essentially, the player completes challenges and then rewards themselves with health, damage and shield oriented permanent buffs for all characters.

Conclusion - 19.3/20

Summarising this high achieving experience, Borderlands 2 exceeds in its gameplay, environment and multiplayer functionality. Its surprising story is engaging and Pandora's citizen are vastly different and hilarious none-the-less. The onslaught of hilarity never ruins the serious tone that the game creates. Gearbox have successfully created a deep connection between the player and Pandora. Unfortunately, the game's graphical issues substitute it from perfection. Though, this title should not be missed or replaced with anything else.

Welcome Back to Pandora...

Big Topic: Continuous Characters Crucify Creativity

In the Video Game world there are hundreds of series and franchises. Some of these spin off spawners release sequels and unrelated titles annually. Yet, do these sequels slaughter the creativity and originality that used to be apart of our modern virtual market. Enter any video game or entertainment store/website and adjust your eyes as originality is now a minority. Infamous series such as 'Call of Duty' and the 'Pokemon' franchise are substantiating small unique 'one trick pony' masterpieces by blocking the industry with the same repetitive content as 4 years ago.

So where did all of the creative developers disappear to? They've been sacked and bankrupt as the average gamer prefers improved old styles of gameplay over completely different mechanics. For instance, the critically despised 'Final Fantasy XIII' sub series has very different layers in all of it's games (Final Fantasy XIII, XIII-2, Lightning Returns) graphically and story wise. Though it isn't the major cause of it's financial failure, having each game's mechanics and world being different provides a new experience unlike the previously stated, repetitive 'COD' franchise.

Although, there have been some titles this year that have bombarded the market with their unique playability and aspects. Games such as 'Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning'; 'Anarchy Reigns'; 'Dragon's Dogma' and several indie games defined their place in this year's creativity drought.

On the other hand, a majority of the games releasing in this half (July-December) of the year are sequels. Capcom's 'Resident Evil 6'; Gearbox's 'Borderlands 2'; the Xbox exclusive 'Halo 4' (Really 7) and Ubisoft's 'Assassin's Creed 3' and 'Far Cry 3' just to name a few. Though, it's not like these games are going to ruin the industry as they look entirely original and incomparably different to their predecessors (Specifically Resident Evil 6 and Far Cry 3).

In the end, the year has been flooded with sequels and prequels alike. Creativity and IPs have been clouded with franchise finishers. However, this struggle for originality will end soon as the steam punk inspired stealth title 'Dishonored' is released next month, reminding us that developers still have unique ideas even 30 years past the first console war.

Retawes Review: Sleeping Dogs

Sleeping Dogs - 14/20
With the announcement of 'Grand Theft Auto: 5/V', does Sleeping Dogs have the originality and play-ability that sets it apart from other open world games?

Story and Setting - 7/10

Sleeping Dogs' plot revolves around protagonist Wei Shen. Wei, an undercover cop with a vendetta against the Sun On Yee gang, must disguise himself as a new recruit of the infamous offenders and exploit it's weaknesses and objectives. Throughout the game, the player has the option of aiding the Sun On Yee or the Hong Kong Police Force. Within these choices, Wei meets a vast of characters from both the eastern trickery tribe and crime fighting club such as his childhood friend Jackie Ma and Wei's police consultant Inspector Jade Teng.

Although, it isn't all black and white in Hong Kong. Within Wei's adventure, there are several hidden secrets and dangerous paths being discovered and revealed as time goes on. For instance, there is a constant border dispute between Sun On Yee members Dogeyes and Winston as these two malicious crooks maintain their power over Hong Kong.

Speaking of the eastern market city, developers Square Enix have enlarged the stereotypical zone with arrays of local activity to create the illusion that the world is enticingly real. There are streets upon streets of citizens interacting with one another and Wei, offering tasks and errands to be completed for Police and Sun On Yee fame.

Though be warned as playing on the fence will result in both sides wanting your head!

Musically, the game is rather dis-interesting. There aren't any tracks that bring the 'outstanding piece' factor to the game. Sure, SD gives you the opportunity to switch radio stations while on the road similar to Grand Theft Auto yet the songs and stations feel vastly bland and have very little variety. Unfortunately, the music is so dull and bland to me, that the composer of the game, Jeff Tymoschuck has placed a very judge-mental view of his quality of music in my head.

Incidentally, the sound effects and voice acting in Sleeping Dogs is the exact opposite. When Wei punches an enemy or jumps over a wall, you hear exactly what you would hear in a film. Though, the famous actors who voiced some of the iconic characters stole the show overall. Stars such as Lucy Lui, Emma Stone and Total Recall's Will Yun Lee are just a minority of the excellent A ranked quality of voices in this eastern mafia tale.

Graphics and Gameplay - 7/10

Graphically speaking, Sleeping Dogs isn't as 'show and tell' worthy as one would expect. On console, the game suffers from rare frame rate issues and rendering dramas. Furthermore the graphics seem like something one would see in a 2010 title. Hell, even the first Assassin's Creed was more alluring.

However, when you play SD on PC, you forget about the console conundrums and realize that it isn't Square Enix's engine that causes rendering issues or aged graphics, but the console copies of Hong Kong have been graphically summarized. In the PC edition, their is perfect shadow effects, water reflections, proper models and sleek design that all assist in creating an immersible atmosphere derived from the eastern market society.

Gameplay wise, Sleeping Dogs doesn't do anything that differs from the open world road. Sure, there is a variety  of combat options from tackling enemies and breaking their legs (Brutal) to throwing them into running fans or a humongous bowl of boiling oil and the assorts of mini games (Chicken Fighting, Arena battles, Drug busts, Chase scenes, hacking devices, etc) are there yet the game just feels like GTA set in Hong Kong. The whole essence of SD just feels pushed and bombarded with the 'experience' that the story and triple A voice acting produces.

Overall - 14/20

In the end, Sleeping Dogs does very little to peek from the open world box. Whether you are looking from a graphical or gameplay wise perspective, the game is rather typical. Square Enix have heavily persuaded customers with their superior cast yet, the whole game feels as if it isn't complete and that it was edited from start to finish. Though, with such a rugged development cycle that this game has had, it doesn't surprised me. As you can guess, I am rather disappointed with this title. I didn't expect to play an 18-20/20 game, but I didn't expect to pick up a illogically bland and sheer cardboard copy of the Grand Theft Auto formula.

EDIT: My apologies for the lack of images in this review, but I was so guttered and frustrated with this bland title that I decided not to devote time to capturing pictures.

Retawes' Let's Play: Counter Strike (Global Offensive)

Welcome Cave dwellers to my first "Let's Play" videos. For my debut of the several gameplays to come, I have decided to dive into Valve's tactical shooter. In this short 11 minute video, I fail at some revolutionized 'Gun Game' tagged as Demolition. In Demolition, players must either defuse or set a bomb or eliminate the entire team. Upon each round, players will receive new weapons if they have succeeded in killing or eliminating an enemy in the previous round.
Enjoy!

Retawes Review: Darksiders 2

Darksiders 2 - 18/20

With recent reports that THQ are in bankruptcy, does Darksiders 2 create salvation or damnation?

Story and Setting - 9.2/10

Darksiders 2 parallels its predecessor's plot. Framed for causing a universal dilemma, War -one of the four horseman- is imprisoned by the 'Council'(Reference to the original Darksiders). Meanwhile, one of his brethren Death, seeks to redeem his brother and prove his innocence. However, D2's story and lore involves more than just a family dispute. Death sees himself trapped between factions and conflicts that span from centuries past. Helping the 'Makers'; (The 'creators') travelling to and from the Underworld, City of the Dead and Earth, all of these tasks are laid on Death's skeleton shoulders.

One of the several zones of Darksiders 2
Speaking of the environment, Darksiders 2 is far larger than War's journey. With over four diverse maps, players will be  From the peaceful, native 'Garden of Eden'-esque society of the Makers, to the cursed, plague-driven world of the 'City of the Dead'. 3D textures in the foreground and nostalgic 2D, artwork as the background leaves the player with the possibility of further exploration than the game conveys.

Incidentally, throughout D2, there is a vast majority of exploring to do. Dungeons, forests, hidden caves, demonic halls, Vigil Games has just given players the opportunity and ability to endeavor in environmental inspections with a range of creative characters.

Death, grow an attitude!
Mentioning the chaotic cast, Vigil Games stage an array of figures and personas with fleshed out stories and characteristics. For instance, during the 'City of the Dead' area, Death meets an undead jury, king, chancellor, assassin and a centaur merchant who is the last of his kind. Although, these characters are more interesting than the game's protagonist. Death, does occasionally use wit and sarcasm in his speech yet, he never portrays a specific attribute. Sure, when you give him some 'epic' armour or a flame elemental hammer Death becomes more gruesome and surreal but his personality is rather bland. Even War was easier to understand his complexion.

On a side note, Death does have an engaging back story that relates to all of the four horseman (War, Death, Fury and Strife) and their nemesis, 'Corruption'.

Musically, the OST (Original Soundtrack) provides assorted amounts of tracks that span across all scenarios. From peaceful acoustics that emulate the calm atmosphere of the 'Makers' to the orchestral 'adrenaline pumping' battle pieces, D2 captivates the essence of video game music unlike much in the modern market. Specifically tracks such as "The Makers Theme", "Into Eternity" and "The Makers Overworld". The composer, Jasper Kyd should be rewarded on his creative tunes.

Remotely, the cast of the apocalyptic tale always heighten the bar. Characters such as the Satan-esque Samuel and the wise Crowfather feel like their voices are real and envision into a fantasy. Although, the 'Makers' seem to have a heavy Irish and Scottish accent.

Graphics and Gameplay - 8.8/10

Darksiders 2 separates itself from its predecessor in several ways. The first and most obvious of them is the additional RPG mechanics.

The mechanic essentially is a 'loot and stat' system where Death finds clothing, weapons and talismans within the chaotic world, in order to equip, sell and upgrade other items for his benefit. Each item is unique and there are arrays upon arrays of shoulder pads, pairs of scythes, hammers, daggers and whatnot to discover. Each of these individual equipment, gives Death different additional stats and upgrades to his strength, defense, health, damage, speed, resistance, elemental damage, etc. There is also rare gear and armour sets scattered through undiscovered dungeons and by completing quests.

In related matter, quests are another additional feature in D2. As Death aids and is assisted by several characters, Vigil Games have decided to give the player the ability to level up with quests and defeating enemies. Some quests are as simple as defeating a boss or fetching for hidden items yet some span throughout the entire game. For instance, Vulgrim (The demonic rare item selling merchant) gives you the task of finding the four chapters of the 'Book of the Dead', rewarding you as you discover each chapter. Likewise, a mysterious plant creature named 'Blackroot' demands that you search for his mystical appetite, stones enfused with enhancements.

Aside from quests, Death also interacts with other characters through purchasing items and new moves for combat. Characters such as the ghostly assassin, Draven teaches Death advanced techniques for defeating goons and bosses.

Cthulhu? As a boss battle?
Coincidentally,  Death's enemies and minions are completely varied. The minions are created based on their area and faction. For instance, there are corrupted angels in the 'Heaven'-esque society and skeleton soldiers  in the 'City of the Dead'. Incidentally, the bosses are completely unique and reflect on Darksiders 2's overall identity. Each boss, is played out with a blend of combat and puzzle formula. Just as, the (SPOILER ALERT) Colossus style boss, the 'Guardian' consists of Death using several gadgets and utilities to dismember the monstrous structure to  harm its 'weak points'. (SPOILER ALERT END)

Speaking of Death's gadgets and tools, Darksiders 2 provides a numerous amount of puzzles that the player must solve. At first, these puzzles are quite basic and just involve using one method but near the end of Death's journey, they involve all five of Death's tools (Clone/Doppelganger device, Time travel, portals, grapple hook and Strife's gun).

Lingering on to the role-playing mechanics in Darksiders 2, upon leveling Death has the option of endorsing skill points earned from leveling into the two skill trees; the magic specializing, zombie spawning 'Necromancer'; and the melee oriented, slash and clash 'Harbringer'.

"Did you just call me fat?"

Graphically speaking, the game is a mess. At times, it performs smoothly with little to no frame rate issues yet occasionally suffers from rendering, freezing  and crashing conundrums.

Furthermore, a friend of mine had his save file corrupted as his game froze as it was saving. Although all of this can be fixed with a simple update.

Overall - 18/20

To conclude, Darksiders 2 is a surprisingly engaging game. If you ignore the graphical corruption and Death's dull personality, then you'll enjoy the creative cast, environments, tricky puzzles and in depth Role-Playing mechanics while defeating demons, completing character's conundrums, exposing secrets and proving War's innocence.
Dominatrix ALERT!

Retawes' Top 10: Video Game Characters

Here is a list of my personal favorite characters in video games many of whom are featured in 'Japanese Role-Playing Games' or 'Platformers'.

Lightning's costume in 'Final Fantasy XIII-2'
10. Lightning from 'Final Fantasy XIII'. Now, I know that XIII has been hated upon by critics and 'Final Fantasy' veterans alike, but none can detest that Lightning is a likable badass to beat. From fighting colossal beings to surviving in an artificial reality against an army of monsters, she really has no flaws in the combat and brute department! Also, she's one of the main female protagonists in a Final Fantasy game that doesn't portray the sexist 'damsel-in-distress' stereotype unlike Yuna and co.

"What'cha just call me?"
9. Axel from 'Kingdom Hearts'. When I think of 'Kingdom Hearts 2', one of the several images that crosses my mind, is Axel spinning his inferno chakrams during his boss fight with Roxas. Even though, he's whole appearance and persona is a complete mystery, I still find him to be one of my most memorable characters in video game history. I recall the year being 2005, when I discovered this hot-headed arrogant fire ball. Though, it's a shame that he isn't featured in other KH games since the 'nobodies' adventure.

Crash's guide to flirting: Spin and smile!
8. Crash Bandicoot from the 'Crash Bandicoot' series. Growing up as a late 20th, early 21st century child, nothing was better than booting up my PlayStation and spinning around evil turtles and be ridding of Neo Cortex. Crash Bandicoot was my idol. He always tackled his problems with a spin and chuckle before bolting off into the next issue. Although, I guess my attraction towards the mammal maniac was due to the whole universe and the way that he interacted with everything and everyone, with a simple smile and spin.

Grunt hasn't had his dose of blood this morning....
7. Grunt from 'Mass Effect 2'. If there was a specific reason why #2 is my favourite space RPG of the series, it would most definitely be the characters. From dying assassins to masked crusaders, the game has it covered for variety. Although, my most favored of the bunch is the ultimate Krogan super-soldier, 'Grunt'. This guy could even take a whole Reaper army (Had I not have him die previously) on with just his raw fists and rage.

"Anyone want a slightly used Bat-Suit? I'm sure the blood'll wash off!"
6. Penguin from 'Batman: Arkham City'. So, he may not initially be from a video game, but he still is one of my most favored crooks in Arkham. With his 'deadly' umbrella and penguin army, this man has plotted to rise among the sewers and take over Gotham from time to time. However, there isn't any doubt that the sole reason that I admire him is for a laughable cause. I mean, he's a stereotypical midget who cackles like a winded witch and carries a explosive wielding umbrella as a weapon. That aside, his boss battle in AC was truly memorable as the most ridiculous villain in superhero history.

Previously on the 'Four Horseman'.....
5.  War from 'Darksiders'. One of the famous horseman, War represents everything that his name contains. With his giant claw and blade, he battles mighty demons and mythological beings to achieve their (their meaning him and his brother's) goal, 'Peace among Heaven, Hell and the Middle-Earth'. What's most unique about him is that throughout all of the hardships and hurdles that he faces, he never shows a sign of insecurity or defeat.

4. Shadow from the 'Sonic' franchise. This nemesis of the optimistic speedster is completely what Sonic isn't. Austere, harsh and borderline insane, he wields several military weapons and is usually seen driving his motor bike or battling the blue hedgehog and friends. He is even so significant and popular that he has his own spin off game, titled 'Shadow the hedgehog'. The game basically explains Shadow's depressive personality and brutal history as a military/science experiment gone wrong.
"Chaos Control"

3. Sephiroth from 'Final Fantasy VII'. This villain of the Tifa and Cloud title is a pure and utter criminal. From assassinating Cloud's crush to ruining the world, this man has done some horrible commitments to Gaia's people. However, this is what makes him so likable and admirable. With his deep connection with Cloud, this 'One Winged Angel' is a true devil, from his long and fatal 'Masamune' blade, to his cascading luminous hair transcending past his shoulder blades.
"Tell me what you cherish most. Give me the pleasure of taking it away..."

2. Charizard/Bowser from 'Pokemon'/'Super Mario Bros' series. Aside from PlayStation, whilst growing up I also owned a gameboy and eventually a gameboy colour. At the time, the only games that I owned on it was 'Pokemon Red' and a couple of Mario titles. When I played Pokemon, I remember being completely obsessed with Charmander and its evolutions. With Bowser, I really learned of his fire breathing attitude when I played the 'Super Smash Bros' series which with the addition of Charizard made the two most ideal and daring dragon like characters become one in my list.

"The darkness may destroy my body, but it can't touch my heart"
1. Sora from the 'Kingdom Hearts' series. No spiky haired protagonist could beat this keyblade wielding teen. Even though he has the fate of various 'Disney' and 'Final Fantasy' inspired worlds on his soldiers, he is always carefree and empathetic towards others. Specifically when his friends are involved as several of his adventures revolve around Sora rescuing his best friends, 'Riku and Kairi'.

The Square Enix Announcement and Wishlist

As many of us gamers would have noticed, Square Enix has been losing it's famed title "God of the JRPG" as of late. However, could it be that they are secretly hiding the famous Kingdom Hearts 3?

Please...Don't Be Cancelled!
Recently, several sources announced that Square Enix had anonymously axed the action oriented game (FF VS XIII). Though this was a domino effect that started on Kotaku.com and spread like a wild fire. Of all of the sources, it was IGN that endorsed the rumour specifically as they presented various ways to explain information, whether that be through  their 'daily news' videos, articles, editorials, podcasts or foreign social networking sites such as 'Facebook' or 'Twitter'.

As expected, this caused an outrage among critics and fans alike. With the game in development from 2006, it was near obvious that it would have been cancelled soon enough. In fact, there hadn't been a trailer or any leaked information in at least a year!

However, this whole speculation was completely disproved by Square Enix producer Yoichi Wada, post JRPG fan rebellion. He praised on 'Twitter',
"There's someone making a false rumour that 'Versus' was cancelled.....just a minute ago, the regular 'Versus' meeting ended. If you saw the presentation of the city, I'd knock you off your feet!"
What did I just hear? Sound the alarm; ring the bells as the Otaku Goddesses have granted us a gift from their respective womb!

Now, am I the only one who's praising this man and vilifying Kotaku for temporarily screwing the video games industry? Incidentally, Mr Wada concluded with suggesting a significant announcement during early September for the Final Fantasy franchise. Now, I don't want to sound gullible or obnoxious here, but I have a pretty good theory that this announcement has something related with "Versus XIII".

Furthermore, I believe that the announcement will involve four different contrivances. Initially, there will be a new release date that optimistically is in 2012 but realistically in 2013. Along with some press information indicating that "Versus" will be on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. To continue, the announcement will betoken some news on the story and gameplay with some sort of trailer or preview. Conclusively, the "Fabula Nova Crystalisis" final should be renamed. With various latest generation's JRPGs having the name XIII, it would be ideal to change the name to a more simplistic and less specific title specifically "Final Fantasy XV".
None the less, I will be anticipating this press release and will be reporting on it as I hear it.

Retawes (Movie) Review: Snow White and the Huntsman

Snow White and the Huntsman - 9/10

From Hansel and Gretel to "Sleeping Beauty", everyone knows of the famous fairy tales. However, Director Rubert Sanders has decided to take a dark fantasy fling to the iconic story of Snow White.

Snow White's soldiers looking pretty bad-ass!
Essentially, the plot is similar to the classic but possesses a more adult and serious tone to the films. In the magical world of Tabor, the Queen has died of a fatal illness and the King has married a mysterious woman that could only be related to evil itself. This vague villain named Ravenna desires the inevitable, immortality which results in her assassinating the King with her only witness being her step-daughter, Snow White. A decade pasts and Queen Ravenna know rules all of Tabor which causes plagues and disaster to torment the lands. Though, Queen Ravenna isn't the only royal mistress that lives on as Snow White, whom is now trapped in the castle's prison defines a plan conquer the land back from the evil witch. Now, even though that Snow White is famous for being the purest soul on Earth, she's going to need some help to defeat the infamous evil queen. From the seven dwarves to the "mighty" Huntsman, Rubert Sanders really tries to intertwine these various fairy tales.

No! My Skincare!
Incidentally, the writers and casting crew should also be congratulated on bringing in such a remarkable cast. For instance, Charize Theron who plays the malicious Queen Ravenna is undoubtedly a very cold looking person so ideally playing as a cold hearted character was no difficult task. However, when the Queen soliloquies her insecurity of age and absorbs the young's youth to stay healthy is such a gripping and cascading idea that portrays some of the dark, adult fantasy that this movie provides.

If there was but on criticism that I would have with the movie, it would revolve around Kristen Stewart and her bizarre obsession with frowning or showing a unpleasant face at all times!

Note aside, this movie is brilliant from start to finish. An absolute 10/10 if it weren't for Kristen Stewart's mouth movements and awkward scenarios. Kudos, Rubert Sanders.....You've done well!

Retawes Recap #1

Welcome to my new youtube oriented segment "Retawes Recap". Retawes Recap is basically a 10-15 minute summary of the latest gaming news (In the past 1-3 weeks). As I have a tendency to go off topic, these videos may become more of a discussion than summary of the topics in our gaming society.

Note: As this is my first video/vlog, I am particularly more nervous than I have ever been! So, please ignore my occasional "ums", awkward pauses and such as I only speak from my mind and not from a piece of paper. This is so that my 'fans' or 'viewers' get to understand what I am like or about without any edits or without portraying myself as someone I am not. Hope you enjoy!

Retawes Review: Diablo 3(Spoiler Free!)

Diablo 3 - 15/20
With a humongous fan base and extended time for development, is Diablo 3 worth the wait? Or has Blizzard followed the atrocity of Duke Nukem Forever?

Story and Setting - 6/10

The Diablo franchise revolves around one or more heroes known as nephalem that are tasked with defeating the seven demons of chaos. In the third title of the series, only Belial and Azmodan remain and the whole world of Sanctuary relies on the mysterious stranger, the famed Deckard Cain, his niece Leah and the Nephalem, i.e. the player. Within the world of Sanctuary, there are several locations that are explored in each act (There are four acts in total). From the plague driven town of New Tristam, to the middle-eastern inspired market city.

Aside from the environment and characters, the soundtrack of Diablo is present but minimal. This is due to the fact that there is little to no 'action' or adrenaline pumping tracks. Most of the pieces are quiet and melodic but feel out of place. However, the small action sequences feel forced and unexpected to say the least.

Graphics and Gameplay - 9/10

The art style of the game is very 'Blizzard' in the sense that the cartoon like action is very captivating and fun. However, Diablo fans play Diablo not for the story or graphics, but for the gameplay.

In some ways, the game is similar to it's predecessors but very different. For instance, there is still loot and gems that can be equipped to your gear. But, the skill setup system is completely new and has evolved (or devolved depending on your view of things) into the new upgrade system that the Diablo clones are becoming. You still have to level up to achieve new spells and traits but in D3, you can;'t chose how you level up. What I mean is that if you are the necromancer like Witch Doctor class and you wanted to specify your character to use minions,, you will have to wait until he has unlocked every damn spell to do so. This is alright for some players but true veterans may get upset with this costume change.

Witch Doctor and his mutant pets!

Incidentally, there are five classes in the game that are completely varied in all aspects. They are the brutal, slaughtering axe using Barbarian; the arcane specialising British Wizard; the eastern influenced spiritual Monk; the arrow obsessed, trap using Demon Hunter and the zombie friendly Witch Doctor. What's most interesting about these characters is that they each have personality. For instance, the later (Witch Doctor) is a jamacian/african tribal member who will be remembered for his deep, third person way of speaking, "I have to get to da temple".

Aside from their personality and the Barbarian, each class feels fresh and new to the series and showcases a different way to play depending on the player. Want to play with your several zombie and mutated pals? Play as a Witch Doctor! How about deceiving enemies into walking into your traps? Demon Hunter!

However, playing solo is only but a miniature element of Diablo 3. Playing with friends or other players, boosts the chance of getting rare gear and levels you up faster. For instance, I was levelled up my Demon Hunter in half of the time it took for my Witch Doctor as I was playing with my Monk ally.

What's even more exciting about Co-op is that loot isn't shared. What's that I hear? Several Diablo veterans crying tears of joy as they won't be 'ninja'd anymore! However, you can still give your friends gear by dropping the item, trading or forcing them to purchase it of the auction house.

Go burning Zubats!

Speaking of which, the auction house is how Blizzard are wanting to keep you playing the game. Blizzard have created two different auction houses. The first is the basic one which uses Diablo gold as the currency. The other uses real money and Paypal accounts. Personally, I think it's just pointless but I see that someone will make use of it!
Incidentally, Blizzard have made it that to play the game, the player must have a constant internet connection which for some, will cause an array of technical dramas.

Overall - 15/20

Aim...Set...FIRE!

Concluding my beginning inquiries, Diablo 3 was definitely worth the wait! Nothing could of made the game more brilliant, gameplay wise. However, the story is slightly above average and the soundtrack is mediocre at best. If you're a Diablo veteran, then you'll adore this title. Though, if you're a newcomer like me, then you'll feel like you've approached an ongoing conversation.

Retawes Review: Dragon's Dogma

Dragon's Dogma - 16.5/20
With the success of action  RPGs such as Skyrim and Kingdoms of Amalur, could Dragon's Dogma beat the western competition?

Story and Setting - 7.5/10

Dragon's Dogma's story is simple. In the medieval/fantasy world of Gransys, a ferocious dragon invades a small fishing town known as Cassardis. Upon this attack, the dragon enjoyably devours a fisherman's heart. This fisherman (i.e. You) is then branded as an Arizen whose task is to seek out the dragon and defeat it to collect his heart.
Within your travels, you discover that as an Arizen, there are positives and negatives. The negative is that everyone wants your help with a task, whether it be deciphering a hidden text or defeating a band of hobgoblins. On the other hand, as an Arizen, you are given the ability to posses spiritual beings known as Pawns. Pawns are basically your party members and can make a big difference to the game as does the setting.
Speaking of Dogma's environment, the whole world is largely unique upon each zone. From wide open plains to cascading valleys, there is always something new to explore and the whole world is just surreal!
Like these varied areas, enemies are also spotted around the world depending on the weather, time and environmental conditions. But we'll get to that a bit later.
This map is just waiting to be explored!
On another note, the music of Dragon's Dogma is on par with the likes of Final Fantasy or any epic RPG tale. From melodic and peaceful piano pieces, to heavy J-POP from the 80's, this game has something to give you that special adrenaline rush.
Incidentally, the voice acting in this game was surprisingly astounding. Each character has an original voice or style to how they talk which reflects on where the come from in the world. For instance, the French accented crusader, Ser Mercedes (Yes, that is her actual name.) talks with a strict slur that none of the civillians from Gransys' capital, Gran Soren speak of.

Graphics and Gameplay - 9/10

As I've already stated, Dragon's Dogma is a beautiful game. The game runs on Capcom's 'MT Framework' engine which isn't well known but for sure will be now! Capcom should be congratulated (For once!) for their brilliant display of the game's physics. For instance, if you are carrying a lantern and you walk into water, you conduct the 'soaked' condition.

Incidentally, there are several dis-enhancements in the game, which include the hypnotising sleep; the aggravating poison; the possessive curse; immobilising paralysis but also the damage dealing burn. However, all of these incurables can be cured with the use of herbs or a mage.

As you can see, Capcom really thought outside the RPG box!
Speaking of which, there are initially three classes: the sword and shield Fighter, the ranged Strider and the arcane specialising Mage. From these classes comes three alternate classes that branch of the original three. Then there's the hybrids classes that branch of the alternate classes. These include the wicked love child of the sorcerer and ranger, 'Magick Archer'; the blend of ranger and warrior, 'Assasin' and my personal favourite, the sorcerer/warrior known as 'Mystic Knight'. Don't like the class your playing as, well don't worry as changing classes is like changing the channel on a remote, it's that easy!

Incidentally, your pawns use this 'vocation' system as well. However, your main customisable pawn is the only one that you can change their vocation and upgrade their skills. Speaking of which, to obtain alternate secondary pawns, you need to find the portals scattered around Gransys that send you to the Pawns' alternate universe. Here, you can find other players pawns and recruit them however to do so, you have to obtain rift points that are mostly accessible via sending your pawn to other players.

On the flip side, the gameplay of DD is smooth and fluid. From casting an endless supply of spells (You get six to use on your 'action bar' but there's over 50 spells!) to swinging your ridiculously large greatsword, the game never stutters or frame-rate drops to the biggest degree. Aside from the action, there is a big concept of weight and it's impact on your characters. For instance, if you are carrying a load of bones, gems, etc and are classified as very heavy, you use more stamina then others when moving and are less affected by weather conditions such as wind or rain.
Speaking of the stamina system, whether you're running up a hill, climbing up a hill, fighting enemies or clinging onto a giant griffin, you and you're pawns, stamina is used. Now, you're probably wondering, "What do you mean, clinging onto a giant griffin?". Well in Dragon's Dogma, players and their pawns can climb onto enemies to attack their weakspots and such. For instance, when I was faced with defeating a giant rock golem, I climbed onto his back, neck and other ligaments to target his several weak points for extra damage. This is a brilliant example of why Dragon's Dogma's combat system is unlike any action RPG I've played lately.
Speaking of fighting, the game has a vast range of bizarre and creative creatures to defeat. From the obvious,  wolves and bandits, to the horny trolls that go crazy upon seeing a female; large ogres whose horns seem to relate to their brains; harpies that sing you to sleep; deadly hydras and the mythological chimeras, the game's environment is centred around Greek mythological creatures and medieval 'history'. Most of these enemies are all found at night if you don't have a light source which brings me to the next insanity of Dragon's Dogma, the day/night cycle.
More than one of these things in pitch black is sh*t scary!
When it's daylight, you'll rarely see a giant or group of skeleton soldiers but upon nightime, every possible nightmare is released from the developer's mind to haunt and punish those that don't bring their lanterns to explore. In fact, in my first few hours when I discovered this, roughly three chimeras, an ogre, a bandit of thieves and an army of goblins (pathetic medieval cockroaches) startled me in a forest that I refuse to go back to!

Unfortunately though, the game at times suffers from a few glitches which occasionally can be funny and helpful but usually are unfair and make the game unplayable. For instance, when I was fighting a troll in the Ancient Quarry, I could barely see the enemy as the camera was stuttering from the enclosed environment.

Overall - 16.5/20
Just compare me to Alicia Keys? I dare you!

To summarise my whole review, Dragon's Dogma is a game that pushes boundaries with it's game's physics, art style, combat and soundtrack yet is missing some of the outstanding quality that is on offer in other RPGs. Either way, this game is worth it for the eastern story, characters and lush variety of playability.

Retawes Reboots: I Dream An E3 Dream.....

As E3 is right round the corner, I thought that I would release an article that 'prophesizes' the possible announcements for E3.

Bethesda: Fallout 4: New York

With the success of 2010's Fallout set in New Vegas and having its turn on the Bethesda cycle (Fallout/Elder Scrolls), it wouldn't be surprising if Fallout 4 was announced at this year's E3.
Even though this is a Fallout 3 mod, it still looks pretty cool!
Speaking of which, with the popularity of the New Vegas' setting, I think that the next game in the series should be set in New York. Just imagine the possibilities that could happen! Each famous site of New York could be owned by a different faction. For instance, the Brotherhood of Steel could own the Empire State Building, where as Legion could inhabit Central Park! Heads up Bethesda as this would be an engaging concept for the sequel to Mr.House and friends....

Square Enix: Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy XIV/Versus XIII

Nomura! Answer Us!
With the release of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, E3 and TGS would be the perfect places to properly announce KH3. Now, I understand that Nomura has hinted that Kingdom Hearts 3 will eventually be released however, he has never given us any actual screenshots, gameplay, trailers or release dates.

Incidentally, Versus XIII, XIV or whatever it's called needs to happen. With the obvious similarities between this and KH, Square should release some news for both at this year's E3. We fans deserve to see a new trailer at least. What with the fact that they released a completely epic trailer that lasted 10 minutes before ignoring/avoiding any questions or conferences that involved the futuristic JRPG. Please Nomura, "We need news on Versus or Mickey Mouse!".

Bioware: Dragon Age 3

After the ridiculous attempt of modernising the small franchise, Bioware needs to announce a sequel to the critically appalling Dragon Age 2. A word of advice to and Bioware staff that might read this, make the game's story, characters and environments just like Dragon Age: Origins but with the updated engine of Dragon Age 2. Although, if there is any unneeded back tracking in this sequel, you will suffer!

CyberConnect: Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 3, Asura's Wrath Sequel or spin-off and Bleach or Fairy Tail Fighter

We all know that Ultimate Ninja Storms Generations was just a 'filler' title for fans of the ninja themed series that was made to supplement our need for a new anime inspired fighter/rpg/adventure! Besides the obvious announcement of Ninja Storm 3, I believe that CyberConnect will release an anime inspired fighter that's very similar to their Naruto franchise but with either Bleach or Fairy Tail.
My favourite Anime....and possibly, my favourite game!

Think about it! Natsu or Ichigo fighting against Laxus or Aizen from their respected anime! Also, Fairy Tail's guild scenarios would work well as a Town Portal zone where you can travel to other areas by accessing the Job board and choosing which characters to go as or with.

For Bleach, it'd basically be as if you were playing through the story but it could have a similar concept as 'Naruto UNS Generations' were you play each character's storyline but with far more depth than battle scenes and comic strips!

GTA Meets Bleach....Soul Society Stories!

Note: I will update this page as time goes by with whatever game that I feel should be or wil be announced at E3.....
